Rock the Era is a cultural festival that has been in the works for months with the Buddhist Youth taking the lead here in Miami, while the women and men proudly support them, as they prepare for the historic 80th anniversary of the Soka Gakkai International(SGI-USA) Buddhist lay organization. The SGI International President Daisaku Ikeda will also mark 2010 as the 50th anniversary of his inauguration. Daisaku Ikeda is known, among other initiatives, for the Gandhi, King, Ikeda Interfaith Exhibit which toured the nation sponsored by Dr. Lawrence Carter, of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
To mark these anniversaries 10,000 SGI Buddhist youth from around the nation plan to gather in historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in July for an unprecedented cultural festival. Miami Buddhist youth, like Buddhist youth around the nation have gathered diligently each 2nd and 4th Sunday for months to practice in groups for the Brass Band, Taiko Drums, Fife and Drum Corps and other performing groups to prepare for this event. Perhaps, in lieu of their favored pasttimes such as going to the malls or playing favorite video games and other fun things, they could be found actually having great fun at the practices. While having fun preparing for Rock the Era, the participants are also learning tremendous values and growth and development for the future through this activity.
Between now and late July when the Miami SGI Youth Division depart for Philadelphia nationwide meetings and practices will continue on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. All ages, are welcome to come out and support these young folks and new participants are most welcome to come out and join. The remarkable impact of these efforts is evidenced in the faces of the many, many youth around the nation voluntarily coming out to Rock the Era.
