The big news is Duke getting destroyed by Miami on the road last night. Yes, that Miami team that couldn’t beat itself for the most part when in the Big East. So, is Miami that under-rated and Duke that over-rated? I’ll go out on a limb and say no to both. Teams have a hot shooting night and teams go stone cold and when they happen like they did last night, a stomping will commence.
Duke will pay in the polls some although I would not expect them to fall too far; they had a bad game on the road. I’m thinking 8 or 9th, 10th at worse due to the recent road loss to NC State. But the voters love Duke and Coach K, so don’t expect much more than that as far as polls. Plus, it is January. Plenty of time for this thing to shake out and Duke already has Miami circled on the schedule for the rematch on March 2nd by now. Believe that!
Miami might rise into the polls, but it’s not a given. They have some good wins alongside last nights destruction of the Dookies, here are some of those:
- #13 Michigan State 67-59
- @UNC 68-59
- Maryland 54-47
- @UMASS 75-62
They also beat Detroit 77-62. You remember Detroit right Syracuse? But here is why they may rise no better than 22nd or so, losses to #4 Arizona 69-50 (That’s a beat down), they also lost to the mighty Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 63-51 (their own LeMoyne-like loss), and Indiana State 57-55.
So, don’t read a whole lot into this one. One got hot while one went ice cold and these things happen. Before you scream who is #1, Syracuse hasn’t exactly been beating down anybody and the loss of Southerland will catch up at some point. So, enjoy Duke haters, but don’t laugh too hard just yet. And don’t crown Miami as much as that talking heads, over-hyped network wants you to either. Not yet on either.
