The spectacle of polo players mounted on horseback against the backdrop of the glittering ocean and the iconic buildings of Miami Beach is expected to draw crowd when the La Martina Miami Beach World Cup returns here for a 10th year this week.

The tournament, which begins Thursday April 24, is considered one of the most unique sporting events in the world. Played on the sand, it will take place on grounds set up between 20th and 22nd streets, and will attract some of the world's best polo players to the four-day competition.

The four days of polo matches and parties begins on Thursday with the La Martina South Beach Polo Cup VI, an event that features eight women's teams competing in a one-day serious of round-robin championship matches. Then on Friday, the men's polo event will commence. The three days of polo matches will involve six polo teams comprised of some of the world's top-ranked players.

But the event is not just about polo. There will be nightly parties, along with an annual fashion show by La Martina in the VIP tent on Saturday afternoon and a Sunday morning "Brunch on the Beach" hosted by celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein. Then, on Sunday afternoon, Lou La Vie will present "Auto Art Miami," a curated installation of some 50 automobiles considered the world's most significant vehicles and valued at over $100 million, will be installed throughout nearby Collins Park.

General admission to the polo matches is free, and concessions will be available for purchase. A limited number of VIP tickets are available that allow entrance to the shaded Grandstand, where complimentary food and beverages are served.
