This year the Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El's will hold its first annual Purim 5k Run/Walk with the Rabbi at 8:00am on March 16th, 2014 .
Purim is a holiday associated with the wearing of costume, which the presenters of the race explain, is “a holiday where all are equal. Tradition teaches us to wear costumes on Purim, so we are all indistinguishable, and those receiving charity are not embarrassed.” Due to this lovely tradition all participants are encouraged to wear costumes for the run!
Medals will be awarded for Top Three finishers male and female, adults and children, top three finishers in incremental age categories and top three Purim costumes. Participants can fundraise to run for Harry’s Kids, a charity established in memory of Harry Harkes, who, the event web site tell us, was “the beloved brother of temple member and title sponsor, Sheva Taber. Harry had his life cut tragically short in a catastrophic car accident on June 22, 2004, at the age of 16. Harry was a camp counselor and had an amazing love for kids, music and animals. In honor of Harry’s Kids, the foundation named for Harry, we pay tribute to this young man on the tenth anniversary of his passing, as we raise money to benefit kids’ programs at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El.”
After the run and awards ceremony, all participants are invited back to Temple, Kol Ami Enanu-El for the annual Purim Carnival.
If you have a love of fitness and Costumes and wish to support a local children’s charity and, maybe, win a medal for you costume skills this looks to be a fun and meaningful event.
