On Tuesday, March 19, 2013 Mi Casa Resource Center received a $15,000 Good Neighbor Citizenship grant from State Farm to support their many programs involving adult self-sufficiency, career training and small business development geared toward disadvantaged workers and underserved entrepreneurs.
This is not the only assistance State Farm gives to Mi Casa. Many of State Farms employees work with Mi Casa as Volunteers. One of their employees, Jessika Aerni, assists with their entrepreneurial programs by educating future business owners about insurance issues they may face and the requirements involved in having a business. They also help with grassroots startups.
One of the recipients of Mi Casa’s success stories is Gloria Duran. She is an immigrant who came to Colorado after closing a business in Mexico in 1997. She wanted to open up a business in the United States and never gave up on her dream of doing so. She worked for other businesses in the restaurant and baking industries and after 2008, when she lost her job at the time, she attended Mi Casa’s training and counseling sessions and with the help of State Farm has fulfilled this dream. Gloria is refurbishing a truck to enable her to take her business mobile where she will be serving authentic Mexican foods which are inspired from her home state, Veracruz.
Mi Casa assisted Gloria with securing a loan of $5,000 with their network of collaborations and partners. She received a Kiva Zip Microfinance program crowd source funded loan which enabled her to get started on her business and repay the loan at s 0% interest rate. She plans on starting her new business with her new truck by the end of March.
