The studio that introduced the world to Leo the Lion, who roars before the start of every movie, turns 90 years old this year. To celebrate, the lion got his paw print cemented at the TCL Chinese Theatre, according to a Jan. 22 press release email, and the studio has also unveiled a new trailer showcasing some of the greatest scenes from some of the greatest movies it has released.
This new trailer, which can be viewed in full at the top of this column, will play in theaters nationwide; on various MGM channels; and on DVDs and social media.
Chairman and CEO Gary Barber had this to say about the studio and its legendary status:
“What a supreme honor it is to preside over a company with such an unparalleled legacy. It’s remarkable to have this opportunity to reflect on MGM’s amazing achievements in film history while also looking ahead to MGM’s bright and promising future.”
Movie lovers can also check out a new Tumblr page, which has various quotes and images from movies like “The Silence of the Lambs”; “Thelma & Louise”; and many others.
In addition, the studio has restored many of its films in 4K resolution and will re-release them to Blu-ray soon. Some of the titles include “RoboCop”; “Rain Man”; “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”; and “Fargo. 20th Century Fox, a partner with MGM, will handle the releases of these titles, all of which are available for pre-order on Amazon.
