This year will be one to celebrate for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the film company better known as MGM. 2014 marks the 90th anniversary of the film studio, and the festivities have already begun. Today in Hollywood, MGM’s famous feline icon Leo the Lion was the guest of honor at a paw print ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theater. Sylvester Stallone was also in attendance for the event, which kicked off a full year of commemorative plans.

Special 4K resolution restorations of signature MGM titles will be released sometime this year. Titles including “Rocky”, “Rain Man”, “Fargo”, “RoboCop”, and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” are available for pre-order on Amazon. However, no release date has been listed as of this writing. The studio also announced that films such as “In the Heat of the Night”, “A Chorus Line”, and “The Birdcage” would hit Blu-Ray for the first time.

MGM also announced a Tumblr site, which they touted as the first of its kind to celebrate a studio’s full film library. The site was live as of press time, and featured links to YouTube videos and imagery from some of MGM’s most popular and successful films on its front page. The studio will also celebrate its art via the paper medium: a collector’s book is on the way. The book will feature interviews with such stars as Stallone, Clint Eastwood and Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis of “Thelma & Louise.” A bonus video disc will also be included with the book.

A special MGM 90th anniversary trailer will play in theaters throughout the year, as well as on MGM’s movie network and across social media. The trailer shows clips of many of MGM’s biggest films, which have garnered 14 Best Picture Oscars and over 175 overall in nearly a century. Gary Barber, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MGM, commented on the studio’s milestone:

“What a supreme honor it is to preside over a company with such an unparalleled legacy. It’s remarkable to have this opportunity to reflect on MGM’s amazing achievements in film history while also looking ahead to MGM’s bright and promising future.”
