Mexico to defend Gold Cup in CONCACAF doubleheader at Rose Bowl

Fans can purchase tickets to see Mexico shoot for a third Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) regional Gold Cup at the Rose Bowl on July 7, 2013. The CONCACAF opener is a doubleheader with the three other soccer teams to be determined later.

Presales of tickets began Thursday on Twitter and Facebook. Public sales begin on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. CONCACAF pits teams from 12 countries in North, Central and South America in a biennial competition. Besides Mexico, teams for 2013 include the United States, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras and Canada. The series of matches concludes on July 28, 2013.

Mexico won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2011 at the Rose Bowl with a 4-2 win over the U.S. The team is very popular in Southern California, so the ticket sales promise to be brisk. The 2011 match saw a crowd of 93,420, which the Los Angeles Times reports to be the largest for a soccer game in the U.S. in 17 years.

The schedule for the competition and pairings for the opening games are expected to be announced in March, as is the site of the final game.
