Mexico to ask for registry of guns in border states, national media silent

Claiming it will make tracing guns used in violent crimes easier, Mexican lawmakers want the U.S. Senate to provide a registry of all commercialized guns in border states like California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, The Blaze reported Monday.

Mexico's Permanent Commission, the government body that meets when the Senate and the lower house of Congress, the Chamber of Deputies, is in recess, formally voted for the measure in early January, Insight Crime reported.

Arizona's KPHO said that Arizona residents are furious about the proposal.

"It's an invasion of privacy. It's an invasion of safety," one person told CBS.

Others referenced the botched Fast and Furious gun running operation in which agents of the federal government allowed guns to be bought and taken across the border by illegal straw buyers.

A post at the blog Maggie's Notebook says that Texas should be allowed to handle the official response for those who support the Second Amendment.

"Immediately after Texas issues the statement, we need 10 Million Americans to clog the avenues of Washington D.C. with the message – don’t even think about a gun registry anywhere in the U.S.," the blog said.

A post at the Independent Sentinel says, "no way, Jose."

"It’s not only problematic because of Fast & Furious, it’s problematic because their police and government are corrupt," the blog said.

The blog questioned the timing of the request, "since President Obama is trying to pass oppressive national gun laws to include gun registration."

"We are talking about a country that kept an innocent former marine imprisoned for months under deplorable conditions over a .22 calibre birdshot rifle he tried to register," the blog added.

A Google search revealed that CBS outlet KPHO was the only so-called "mainstream media" outlet to report the request. The national media, so far, has not reported on Mexico's desire for a registry of U.S. gun owners.
