Leaving Semuc Champey is surreal in a way. The ride in the pick up truck is steep and exciting and the drive out of the valley may ascend through fog that has accumulated in the early morning hours. The next leg of the journey is a long travel day starting in Coban, through Guatemala City and ending in Antigua.
Antigua, or “Old Guatemala,’ is a colorful collective of Spanish colonial architecture, spectacular landscapes and a richly traditional population. Vivid religious processions are held each Sunday in the streets. Grandiose churches command nearly every street corner of the city. The Volcan de Agua towers high on the horizon- one of three volcanoes near the city.
The Saturday market is a perfect way to have breakfast with a dose of culture. Vendors sell all manner of fruits and vegetables- and don’t forget a hot cup of Guatemalan coffee! Artisan markets are held daily and span many city blocks. Everything can be found including: textiles, fine art, ceramics, leather work, name brand clothing, second-hand goods and yes, even cheap plastic junk. The markets and parks are a feast for the senses and a bargain hunter’s heaven.
Budget lodging is plentiful in Antigua. The International Mochilero has inexpensive private rooms, shared bathrooms with clean showers and hot water. The staff was super friendly and the rooms were comfortable. Good food is never more than a few steps away. Whether it is street food or a multi-course meal in one of many great restaurants, a food lover is never short of options for culinary delights.
There is always something to see and do in Antigua. And for the professional traveler, exploring the city on foot is pure joy.
