Club Santos Laguna made short work of Venezuela’s Deportivo Anzoátegui winning 3-0 at the TSM Corona Stadium in Torreon, Mexico in match day 4 of the Copa Libertadores. The Mexican hoops have earned 10 points so far in the CONMEBOL tournament and currently lead all squads after Tuesday’s match-ups.
Andres Renteria opened scoring in the 13th minute of the game when he took the ball into the area and crossed it into the net with Edixon Gonzalez off his line. The ball rolled in for the 1-0. The goal at the 13th minute looked to spell doom for the visiting squad, but the game went to the break with the 1-0 in Santos’ favor.
The Laguneros never gave the visiting squad the chance to remount keeping the ball on the Venezuelan side of the field. Deportivo counted on the occasional error from the Mexicans to mount a counterstrike, but could do no harm to Oswaldo Sanchez’ net.
Colombian Carlos Darwin Quintero, who had a dream game, assisted in the second goal. The “goal scientist” took the ball into the area and centered to Javier “Chuletita” Orozco who was en route to the small area. Orozco hammered the ball into the net for the 2-0 in the 56th minute of play.
The Venezuelans lost their drive after the second goal and completely gave up control of the sphere to the Mexicans. Santos applied more pressure and it looked like the Laguneros would take a huge lead over their South American competitors.
Oribe Peralta scored his third goal of the tournament, again with an assistance from Quintero. The Colombian once again took the ball to the line and then elevated the ball past the defenders to Peralta who headed the ball into the ground to have it bounce inches away from Gonzalez’ reach. The keeper dove but could not prevent the final 3-0.
Santos Coach Pedro Caixinha kept his star players on the pitch for the international competition and took the game with ease. Santos will host Peñarol of Uruguay in their next Copa Libertadores game.
