We left Veracruz heading south to Villahermosa, Tabasco. We thought we were making great progress in our journey through Mexico; so we decided to take the coastal route instead of the tolled highway. Well, guess what, when you get off Ruta180 it may take much longer than anticipated to get back on. At the south end of Veracruz we took the untolled highway along the coast. It was a half day drive later before we were able to continue our journey south on Ruta 180.
Villahermosa
Given the drive south took much longer than expected we arrived in Villahermosa after a long day on the road. Needless to say, we headed towards the hotel zone to secure a room for the night. Whenever you arrive in a busy new city, such as Villahermosa at the end of the day it requires maximum attention. Fortunately, we saw the sign for the Best Western Maya before we drove by. When we pulled into the parking lot, from a six-lane city boulevard that evening, it was a really good feeling.
That night we did not bother to look for a place to dine. We took dinner at the Best Western Restaurant.
Next morning we made an early departure for Campeche, in the state of Campeche. It was a pleasant drive on Ruta 180 to Campeche.
Campeche
In Campeche we stayed at the Ocean View Hotel. This is a nice hotel with an excellent location. The hotel gave us a number of restaurant recommendations for Campeche's historic old town. We decided on Restaurante Marganzo. It was an excellent choice.
We started dinner with margaritas. They served a complimentary appetizer. This was followed by a Cóctel de Mariscos (fish cocktail) and Ensalada Remolacha (beet salad). Our two entrees were Egg Tacos with Pumpkin Seeds and a Pulpo dish. At the end of dinner they served compliments of the house a tamarindo drink, with chile on the rim of the glass.
Historic Campeche has a welcoming atmosphere. After dinner we explored more of Campeche's historic old town. There was an orchestra playing in the central plaza. We saw lots of people enjoying the evening in historic downtown. There was even a fountain with a light show and music.
We had a beautiful evening in Campeche. The beautiful city of Campeche is well worth a visit. Next morning, we are on our way down Ruta 180 towards Merida, Yuctán. For more on my travels through Mexico and elsewhere check out my travel column, or visit me at Spaswinefood.
