A mysterious bus passenger has been exacting revenge for the years of opression on women in one of Mexico’s largest cities.
The LA Times reported Tuesday that Mexican authorities have put undercover police on buses to catch someone they believe is punishing bus drivers who have raped and killed women throughout the country.
Someone calling herself Diana, Huntress of Bus Drivers, claimed that she was the one who murdered two bus drivers earlier in the week in an e-mail.
“You think because we are women we are weak, and maybe we are,” the message says. “But only to a certain point.... We can no longer remain quiet over these acts that fill us with rage,” the report said. “And so, I am an instrument who will take vengeance.”
The e-mail refers to the rampant rape and murder rates of women in Juarez, particularly from the mostly female-employed factories known as maquiladoras. Bus drivers have been known to kidnap women and leave their bodies on the sides of the road.
Two bus drivers were found dead a day apart with gunshot wounds to the head within the last week, prompting a police investigation.
An alleged woman wearing black and with blonde hair is believed to be responsible for the deaths. Police do not know if the Diana in the e-mails is the one committing the murders or not.
“I have no way of knowing if this is true,” Imelda Marrufo, coordinator of a network of women’s organizations, said in a telephone interview from Ciudad Juarez according to the report
“But if it is confirmed, remember, we are talking about a victim, someone who was raped and has probably lived with such a lack of justice that she has no hope that whoever did that to her will ever pay for the crime.”
Rape in the Chihuahua area has been known about for decades. A report from 1998 focused on the problem, which has not gotten better.
'Juarez is the ideal place to kill a woman, because you're certain to get away with it,'' said Astrid Gonzalez Davila, a founder of the Citizens Committee Against Violence according to the report.
