On Wednesday, the Mexican army announced the seizure of 15 tons of pure methamphetamine. The record-breaking discovery was made just outside of Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco.
To put the magnitude of this latest seizure in perspective, total meth seizures throughout the world only amounted to 31 tons in 2009, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
Jalisco has become the center of methamphetamine trafficking for the Sinaloa Cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
In 2009 alone, the Mexican police and military found 215 meth labs across the country, a 400 percent increase of the labs discovered in 2008.
Roughly 90 percent of the methamphetamine sold in the U.S. is brought into this country from Mexico and distributed by several street gangs such as the notoriously violent MS-13.
