A 9-year-old girl living in Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos, a poverty-stricken neighborhood 25 miles south of Guadalajara, Mexico gave birth to a 5.7 pound baby girl on January 27, 2013. The baby was delivered by C-section because the mother’s body was not yet prepared to give birth due to her young age.
The girl, identified only as Dafne, was only 8 years old when was impregnated by a 17-year-old from her neighborhood whom she identified as her boyfriend. Further, Dafne alleged the two had a loving relationship. When the girl realized she was pregnant, at month seven, her boyfriend suggested she move in with him so they could raise their child together. When she refused his offer, the 17-year-old father decided to leave town, approximately two months ago.
Lino Ginzaelz Corona, spokesperson for the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, said authorities are searching for the father so he can provide his account of the relationship between the two. She added the state prosecutor is still open to the possibility of charging the father of the baby with either rape or child sex abuse.
Dafne is one of 11 children in her family. Both of her parents work all day and were not available to watch over her. As a result, they were unaware the girl was pregnant and about to give birth.
Dafne and her baby girl are reportedly doing well. Hospital officials reported Dafne will be receiving both medical and psychological attention.
