Mexicali shaken with two large earthquakes Thursday, residents fearful. Thursday morning, several earthquakes hit Mexicali; the last was at 9:44 am which was a 5.5-magnitude quake that was felt as far north as San Diego.
The 5.5-magnitude quake hit 30 miles south-southeast of Mexicali, and a 4.5 magnitude aftershock hit 18 miles west-southwest of Mexicali an hour before that.
Many of the aftershocks are hitting near the San Andreas fault, which runs north up into California.
Several thousand aftershocks have hit Mexicali since the massive 7.2 earthquake Sunday night, and most have been in the 2.2 to 3.9-magnitude range.
California has reported some structual damage, an official amount has yet to be estimated. Mexicali has reported extensive damage so far and some reports put the damage over $300 million.

The initial massive earthquake hit south of Tijuana, and was felt as far north as Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, and as far east as Arizona and Las Vegas. The US Geological Survey reported that this was the largest earthquake to hit the area in almost 18 years.
Kathy Gonzalez, who lives in San Diego is visiting friends in Salt Lake City for the holiday weekend. Sunday, Kathy watched a CNN report about the earthquake and was worried about her family in San Diego. “It has been such a long time since we’ve had a major earthquake in San Diego. I checked on my family and they are fine.”
