First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. Eastern Time (7:10 p.m. Pacific Time) and it will be broadcast live on SNY, Root Sports and Root Sports in Spanish. For the visiting (46-52) New York Mets, a NY Daily News (July 21) report indicates that LHP Jon Niese (5-4. 2.96 ERA) will get the nod tonight against the Mariners. After a short 15-day stint in the disabled list, the former seventh round pick will try and give his ballclub a much-needed spark on the road.
For the hosting (52-46) Seattle Mariners, a CBS Sports (July 21) report states that skipper Lloyd McClendon will counter Terry Collins’ move with a lefty of his own, as he sends Cuban defector, Roenis Elias (7-8, 4.54 ERA) to the mound. In the midst of a heated Wild Card chase with the LA Angels, the home club would love to get on the win column following a disappointing loss to the Halos on Sunday.
According to MLB oddsmakers, the Mariners will have a slight advantage tonight over the Mets in the probabilities department. The latest odds show that Seattle is a -128 favorite compared to New York’s +118 chances of an upset in Game 1, and that the OVER/UNDER is set at a combined total of 7½ runs.
Can the Mariners keep pace in the intense American League Wild Card race, or will the lowly Mets draw first blood in this interleague series? MLB baseball fans have absolutely no excuse to miss this pivotal series opener between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Mets.
