I asked the readers less than a month ago with the announcement that Brad Emaus had won the second base job for the Mets, "Will Brad Emaus change the Mets fortunes in the Rule 5 Draft?" The short answer to that question is, "no." The Mets announced today that they have designated Emuas for assignment. Under the provisions of the Rule 5 Draft, Emaus must be offered back to the Toronto Blue Jays for $25,000, half of his draft fee.
Emaus, while playing errorless defense, batted a paltry .162 in 37 at-bats with only one RBI, quickly losing time to Daniel Murphy. To replace Emaus' spot on the roster, the Mets recalled Justin Turner from AAA Buffalo, where he was batting .300 at the time of this release.
It is unclear whether the Blue Jays have an interest in claiming Emaus from the Mets. All is not lost regarding their Rule 5 selections. Their other Rule 5 Draft pick this spring, Pedro Beato, has impressed the Mets brass with a spotless 0.00 ERA in nine innings of bullpen work.
