The New York Mets claimed former Braves reliever Manny Acosta off waivers earlier today. The slender Acosta has been with the Braves since signing as a free agent in the summer of 2003. He's seen time with the major league club during parts of the last three seasons throwing a total of 114 innings with Atlanta.
He has a big fastball and the overall numbers look decent enough, but he could never string together enough solid performances to really cement a spot in the Atlanta bullpen. It's not a big loss for the Braves, they have several young arms that had passed Acosta on the pecking order, but despite that I still don't like seeing his big arm go to a division rival - especially when that rival is the Mets.
Acosta had been trying to win one of the final spots in the Bobby Cox's bullpen this spring.
