New York style pizza is definitely one of the best ways to enjoy a classic pizza pie, and Alcoa, TN, right next to Maryville and just south of Knoxville, is not usually where you'd expect to go to get some great New York style pizza in a little, non-franchised pizzeria.  Metro Pizza, however, in Hunter's Crossing shopping center (the one with Wal*Mart, Staples, and Lowe's, not to mention the Alcoa Hooter's restaurant) is just that: great New York style pizza that may very well rival anything you can get in the Big Apple or anywhere else.  At the least, it's got to be some of the best pizza available in the Maryville/Alcoa area, if not in East Tennessee, as at least reviewer of the restaurant mentions in his review of Metro Pizza on Knoxville's citysearch.

Metro Pizza is owned by an older Italian man named Sal (and apparently another fellow named Jay) that has a nice old-world accent in which he very may well tell you how you should visit the Old Country if you get the chance.  He also makes absolutely fantastic pizza in his little shop, usually with faint opera music playing in the background, and if you want to, you can stand there and watch him do it for you.  The prices are also quite reasonable, an extra-large pie (which was enough for three adults) running from just over $13 dollars (for cheese only) to about $21 for the "Kitchen Sink" pizza, Sal's version of The Works.  The sausage is amazingly good, in particular, if you're into classics.

Although the pies at Metro Pizza aren't as large as the ones available at another great pizzeria, Barley's Pizzeria and Taproom in the Old City of Knoxville, the quality, particularly of the crust, compares favorably, as does the pricing.  Of course, the pizzas at Metro's aren't quite the same type, aiming for an authentic New York style, and so they're difficult to compare appreciably.  For Maryville/Alcoa residents, though, Metro's is directly on the way to Barley's and can save time, money, and gas.

You can find Metro Pizza, as indicated above, in the Hunter's Crossing shopping center (where Wal*Mart and Hooter's restaurant are) in Alcoa, conveniently just off US-129 just north of Maryville and about 15-20 minutes south of Knoxville.  More specifically, the address is
1084 Hunter's Xing
Alcoa, TN 37701

Their phone number is (865)982-2200.

I like Metro Pizza a lot, but believe it or not Gondolier is really good too. I think they have a better quality cheese.

Metro Pizza is pretty good, but I'm a sucker for New York style pizza (particularly if it's better than Sbarro). I'm not sure I like it better than Barley's, but Barley's got really expensive lately, and the drive up to the Old City just isn't worth the effort (particularly considering the price!) for me most of the time.
