The world’s first and only heavy metal mariachi band Metalachi graced Long Beach with their second appearance. This one was not only as good as the first but showed everyone just how talented these muchacho’s have become. Sure they are a tribute band but they are the only tribute band not to do the songs they have been played a million times.
The band opened with Warren Moscow’s tradition of introducing the band through a pulled curtain and fog machine then directly into “The Final Countdown” from Europe. Right from the first note and the first screaming female you knew this was going to be an epic spectacle of metal and chi chis. Vega de la Rockha, Juan Jovi, El Cucuy, Maxilimian “Dirty” Sanchez and Poncho Rockafeller were poised and ready to do battle. Motorhead classic “Ace of Spades” came up next and their rendition would have made Lemmy stand up and dance with the devil. A short margarita mixing for one lucky lady took place on stage next as each member poured in their own ingredient but not before the warning to the unlucky fan that interrupted the band during a pre-show gathering backstage that this band loves to play diPiazza’s and is not going to play Alex’s Bar despite his drunken offerings. Once the music took stage again it was time for some love and the Guns and Roses classic “Sweet Child of Mine” followed by a remarkable rendition of the Dio classic “Rainbow in the Dark”. Alice in Chains “Man in the Box” showcased the grunge era of metal as Vega’s voiced channeled Layne Staley. The next 3 songs were every metal fans dream a Metallica jam session. Metalachi was able to pull of “Master of Puppets” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Enter Sandman” impeccably. As chi chis were flying all around the stage the band plunged into “Misirlou” in true Dick Dale flair. “Killing in the Name of” from Rage Against the Machine, Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “La Bamba” closed out the night. The crowd was going nuts as the night ended, screaming and hollering for an encore. Staying true to the metal pioneers before them Metalachi played an encore. “Crazy Train” from Ozzy Osbourne was that encore. Metalachi’s version of the song has received many positive reviews and tonight did not change anything as everyone left diPiazza’s blown away.
The set was amazing as usual and from what rumors were flying about, Metalachi is poised to be a house hold name is the very near future. They are planning on recording and releasing their first album in 2012 as well as branching out to other broadcast media’s. Who knows maybe on March 2nd when they return to diPiazza’s they will have another surprise for their fans. This time it was new shirts, next time maybe a new album; maybe margarita’s but definitely metal done the Metalachi way.
