The best pairings are often the most unexpected!
Peanut butter and chocolate. Clint Eastwood and an orangutan. Lou Reed and Metallica. Well, maybe not that last one but when an idea really flies high and makes total sense in hindsight everyone often gets to saying: "Man, why the hell didn't I think of that one?!?!" I stumbled across one of the raddest radical combinations in my memory just recently and it had me saying the exact same thing: "How did it take so long for someone to take their stab at 'Mariachi' versions of classic Heavy Metal songs?" That's because a group is finally both brave and ballsy enough to do such and they're playing this crazed concoction tonight at Scottsdale's Martini Ranch! So behold Amigos the awesomeness that is the METALACHI!
Now as a 'Gringo' with a name like Jaime' En Fuego I get a lot of people scratching their heads when they hear my professional title, especially when they see a tall white dude with long Goldilocks hair! Yet I hail from the Southwest desert that once was a part of our brethren to the south and therefore am a product of the cultural melting pot it's become much like the members of the band hailing from Estados Unidos border town Juarez, Mexico who went on to storm the streets of Hollywood, California and collectively boast mighty METAL birth names like Vega De La Rockha, Poncho Rockafeller, Ramon Holiday, Warren Moscow, Maximilian "Dirty" Sanchez, and El Cucuy named after the mythical muerto monstrocity of Mexican lore. Musica of the aggressive and heavy variety while pioneered in Europe and the U.S. has been wildly popular in not just Mexico but all down into much of South America where groups like Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden have headlined GINORMOUS concert festivals like Rock In Rio in Brazil that lures hundreds of thousands of headbangers. In fitting fashion, METALACHI have made their musical mark by crafting re-imagined renditions of tunes from both of those bands as well as fellow megastars of the genre like Ozzy Osbourne and Slayer by incorporating various acoustic instrumentos like violin, trumpet and that killer over-sized guitar known as a guitarrón. As if this style of celebrated songwriting and image of gallon hats that American cowboys later ripped off isn't fun enough already, fusing it with the over the top images of spikes, corpse paint and memorable melodies of Metal just sends the sweetness into the stratosphere as evidenced here by their cover of Ozzy's classico "Loco Train" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_5y5KrBoO8!
That is merely a taste of the unique 'Sabor' you will find when witnessing the brilliant melding of mariachi and metal that is METALACHI because they truly must be experienced 'En Vivo' to get the full extent of their excellence! Luckily enough for audiences outside of California the band is currently on a trek to spread their musical gospel throughout the Southwest including stops in Arizona, New Mexico, most of Texas, and an upcoming residency at the 'World Famous' Hard Rock Hotel in Sin City, Las Vegas. I am certain in due time the entire 'Mundo' will discover why this was an idea "That's just 'Loco' enough to work!"
