With the release of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance only a few short weeks away (February 19th, to be exact), Konami has released three brief trailers highlighting gameplay elements from the game. Cutting in whatever manner players deem fit is certainly an appealing feature on its own, but Platinum Games and Kojima Productions have also designed a few mechanics that are tied to the free-cutting of Blade Mode - to give players something to aim for in addition to wantonly butchering their targets. This particular trailer highlights one such mechanic - the "Zandatsu" technique.
Enemies have specific weak points that, when struck with a Blade Mode cut, will expose their repair unit. A button prompt (O on PS3 controllers, B on Xbox controllers) will allow protagonist Raiden to initiate a unique grab that rips this unit out from his target and absorb it into himself. A successful Zandatsu will allow Raiden to restore his health as well as his own spent fuel cells.
While extremely useful, only the weakest of enemies can be cut and Zandatsu'd outright. Stronger enemies are armored and require weakening before they become vulnerable to a blade mode cut and subsequent Zandatsu. In this way, players must effectively utilize Raiden's combos to damage enemies before employing his stronger techniques.
Many of Raiden's combos and attacks result in a subtle slow-down effect, leaving a struck enemy vulnerable for a few precious moments as he is flung or knocked down. Raiden can enter Blade Mode immediately following these particular attacks, allowing him to line-up the perfect cut and initiate a Zandatsu virtually seamlessly.
Developed in collaboration with action game dynamo Platinum Games, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is the latest iteration of Konami's long-standing Metal Gear series. Focusing on Raiden and his enhanced cyborg abilities rather than veteran protagonist Snake, the game lightens its stealth elements in favor of hard action. Given Platinum Games' pedigree for intense and high-quality action games, and Kojima Productions' enthralling Metal Gear storytelling, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is shaping up to be an action game quite unlike any other.
