What has been almost nine months in the making with several dips along the way, FC Barcelona have announced that they will extend their relationship with Lionel Messi until 2019. The club did not give details as to the contract itself, but did say that said documents would be finalized in the coming days prior to Messi reporting to Argentina's training camp in Buenos Aires prior to taking part in the World Cup in Brazil.
According to a report from Catalan daily Sport, Messi will earn €20 million per year after taxes as well as incentives such as matches played, goals scored and titles won. This contract will have him linked to the Catalan giants until 2019. There is also speculation that Messi's contract that he will also own his image rights, some reports have said that the player will own them fully.
This upgrade to his contract would make the Rosario native the highest paid player in the world surpassing Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid star had his contract improved just nine months ago amid the same transfer speculation that Messi went through as well as clubs like Paris- St. Germain and Manchester City were willing to pay the €250 million in his rescission clause.
Messi is the all-time leading scorer in Barcelona history (354) and is also the foreigner with most matches played with the Blaugrana jersey with 424. Messi has also won 21 titles with Barcelona since his official debut with the first team back in March of 2004.
According to Mundo Deportivo, this bit of news could be made official as soon as prior to this weekend's winner-take-all clash against Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou in the final round of the La Liga season. Only a win over Los Colchoneros would see Barcelona win the league title for a second consecutive year and for the fifth time in the past six years.
