Meryl Streep says she thought she was ‘too ugly’ to be an actress

She’s a three-time Oscar winner, but Meryl Streep has revealed she once thought she wasn’t attractive enough to be an actress. On Tuesday, Us Weekly posted comments the 64-year-old actress actress made while accepting an honorary doctorate from Indiana University.

While Streep admitted that as a child she enjoyed dressing up princess dresses and performing for an audience, she added, “Most of us grow out of that. I was always in plays, but I thought it was vain to be an actress.”

The Hollywood legend also revealed that she had some past insecurities: "Plus, I thought I was too ugly to be an actress," she said. "Glasses weren't fabulous then."

The Academy Award winner said women should try not to worry so much about their weight. "For young men, and women, too, what makes you different or weird, that's your strength,” she said. “Everyone tries to look a cookie-cutter kind of way and actually the people who look different are the ones who get picked up. I used to hate my nose. Now I don't. It's okay."

For someone who once thought she didn’t have what it takes to be an actress, Streep has done pretty well for herself. The actress has received a whopping 172 nominations (18 of them Academy Award nods, the most for any actor in history) for her work and has taken home a total of 119 awards.

Of course, there's one person who has become immune to Streep’s steady stream of accolades. According to the New York Daily News, Streep’s husband Don Gummer revealed that he no longer gets excited to see his wife pick up a trophy. “Not sick, I just don’t get excited,” he said. “She just always hates asking people or having people asked to come support her. She gets tired of it ... after a while what can they say.”

Streep showed off her acting chops in a funny way earlier this year. During an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in January, the actress was asked to read boring monologues like an oatmeal recipe and a Wikipedia page, but to deliver them in funny voices. She also read a traffic report, posing as a woman in labor.

This year marks 35 years since the release of Streep’s first Academy Award winning movie, “Kramer vs. Kramer.” Her latest movie, “The Giver,” will be released this summer and the actress has just started shooting the film “Suffragette.”
