Meryl Streep first honoree at Kennedy Honors Gala 2011

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts aired on Tuesday December 27, 2011.  Tonight's honorees Barbara Cook, Neil Diamond, Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins, and Meryl Streep were honored. Watching the show, one is reminded of how much impact one musician or actor can have on America. Tonight the accolades for Meryl Streep were deep and enthusiastic. The overview of her film history brought tears to Meryl’s eyes. Scenes from Sophies Choice, Kramer vs. Kramer, and The Devil Wore Prada, flitted across the screen.

As Kevin Kline said, "Meryl doesn’t take shortcuts in work or in friendship she insists on going the second mile." Roberrt DeNiro said, "She’s up to 16 now, you know what that means? She sat through  the Academy Awards 16 times."

Anne Hathaway sang a tribute that referred back to the film starring Meryl Streep, "The Devil Wears Prada." Both had starred in the award winning  movie of a tough fashion tycoon boss and an assistant (Anne Hathaway) in need of a fashion makeover.

The night brought focus to the work that Meryl Streep has done through several decades. As Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein explained,”

"This year, the Kennedy Center celebrates its 40th anniversary by selecting five extraordinary individuals whose collective artistry has contributed significantly to the cultural life of our nation and the world,"
