Meryl Davis and Charlie White are over the moon about winning America’s first gold medal in the Olympic sport of Ice Dancing. However, according to ABC News on Feb. 18, they had a little help from a friend in the person of five-time Mirror Ball winner Derek Hough from “Dancing With the Stars.”
Not to take anything away from anyone, every member of this award-winning team went flat out. Davis and White have been skating together for 17 years, but it’s still a stressful event, especially in the Olympics where nothing but flat out wins medals.
To go through the most stressful thing in the world, we put so much pressure on ourselves and we did such a great job of being there for each other,” White said at a press conference after the win.
Derek Hough choreographed the couple’s short program which put them at the top of the Olympic “leaderboard.”
They came to me and they said, ‘Listen, we want to go all the way,’” Hough told ABC News. “I feel really confident in them as a team and as a partnership.
“I like to do things outside my comfort zone that I’m not really used to,” he explained. “I picked up pretty quick that [there were] certain things you can and cannot do on the ice. But really, mostly that you can do– that you can’t do on the wood floor."
Hough had high praise for Meryl Davis and Charlie White. “Meryl and Charlie are just amazing human beings. They’re the most sweet and kind people and I’m just so proud of them.”
He’s bursting with pride about their gold medal, too. “It’s just unbelievable. I mean, how do you even wrap your mind around that?”
The short program choreography may open up a whole other world for the incredibly-talented dancer. Derek Hough won an Emmy Award for choreography this year, he has a new book coming out and he’s reportedly working on a new TV series with sister Julianne Hough. Looks like it’s Derek Hough’s time to shine!
Congratulations to Meryl Davis and Charlie White on wining Olympic Gold!
