Merry Miami: Making the Holidays Worth Celebrating

It's that time of year again. No Travel plans to seek out cold air and to wake up and find a newly fresh white winter wonderland? Will there be sleigh bells ringing and snow a glistening? Sticking around sunny South Florida anticipating another warm balmy holiday is just the norm for the residents in these parts. Ahhh, palm trees, mild sunny days, sweet smelling ocean breezes. We are the envy of many across the states. Most of all FLIP FLOPS. These are a staple here in Miami, while one stands on his or her tired feet waiting on a long line or scanning the mall for that perfect gift. Did you hear there is a big sale? No problem! Throwing on some comfy shorts, a t-shirt and those handy flip flops, we can be out of the house in fifteen minute flash, including a gulp down of our freshly squeezed glass of local orange juice!
Meanwhile, northern folks set their morning alarms an extra thirty minutes earlier to make time to bundle up against the ice cold air and to scrape off their snow covered cars. Next, is the wait for the heat to warm up both engine and cockpit a like, to ensure a safe and comfortable ride on the slippery, gray slushy trek out to catch the latest sales on gifts for loved ones. Hats, gloves, scarves, snow boots, socks, sweaters and heavy winter coats, are just some of the extra weight and bulk our northern friends carry around on their hunt for the perfect gift. You can be sure that these friends to our north are vowing to take a vacation next year to the tropics, while sweating like it's one of our ninety degree summer days inside a heated crowded store. Undoubtedly, they are regretting that extra layer they threw on underneath!
Either way, the holidays can be challenging, and may cause many of us to lose sight of celebrating life. So, South Floridians, the next time you know you have taken your stressful holiday deadlines out on your loved ones, co-workers, or even a complete stranger remember this. We are all in this together and one negative experience causes us to pass it on and turn it into another. The next time you are racing your car around to find the best sales and the perfects gifts and the car behind you honks, daring you to take a chance with your life to dart across a busy unclear four lane intersection- stop. Rather than returning the honk or rolling down your window and flipping them a well deserved impolite “finger”, instead just breathe. Smile at the fact that you remembered to take along your swim suit and make your next stop a splash in the pool or a walk on the beach. Maybe your Holiday celebration will spent outside on your veranda gazing out over the ocean, barbecuing in the back yard or even with your feet buried in the sand. Remember that we have beaches, The Everglades, The Keys, beautiful nature and wild life. These are are places where family, friends, and loved ones can spend the holiday time together. Old traditions can be kept, but new ones can also be started! Find the reasons you love living here and feel grateful. Take time for yourself, and care for one another. Have a holiday worth celebrating!
