On the weekends of July 17, 24, and 31, jump in your car and head out to the 18th Century for this year’s Midsummer Magick Renaissance Faire of Southern Connecticut.
What is this adventure I speak of? From the official Web site:
Welcome to the Midsummer Magick Faire, a joyous day in a village of Old England. It is a feast day, and Schreiber’s Farm abounds in excitement!
Today, there shall be a circle of bards, trained in the ancient ways, gathered in competition for renoun and sacred honour. Today merchants and artisans have gathered to purvey their brightest and finest to the people of the town! Jugglers, choristers, musicians, gamesters, fools, and many others have travelled to this happy place to ply their noble trades, and we abound in shamans, conjourers, and sages of all varieties.
And there is yet more! Today, the wiseman Merridwyn (or “Merlin,” as later ages will know him) has visited, perhaps to advise the highborn nobles and knights who’ve come to visit. There will be swordfighting! Drama and adventure! High action and low comedy, learning and gaming, and fun for all. Honest tradesmen, wise teachers, dashing rogues, cunning herbalists, ambitious squires, curious scoundrels, and many more characters will greet and interact with you. Come as you are, or come in thy favorite ancient garb – welcome either way!
Relax and enjoy our many entertainments throughout the village. Take an enthralling and educational nature walk. Read omens with our own auger. Take enjoyment in fine foods and drink! Enjoy the sun gleaming on our beautiful lake.
Greetings and well-met! We bid you, come enjoy the season’s bounty with us!
Years ago, I drove all over the East Coast going to Ren Faires with a group of friends so when I realized there was a new one in Connecitcut, I couldn’t have been happier. (Well, if I hadn’t left all my Ren Faire clothes in a trunk with someone who shall not be named, I would have been a little happier, but that’s another story.)
But this faire is a bit different than those I had attended in my traveling days. If you've been to a Ren faire, as soon as you look at the event's official Web site, you'll see what I mean. Brought to us by Apocalypse Enterprises in association with our friend Jeff Mach, the festival begins on July 17 and incorporates shows, activities, vendors, and my favorite: magick.

This year’s magical headliner is once again the storytelling, singing, adventuring, magical bard Daniel GreenWolf, and the roster of vendors and performers is being finalized. To give you a hint at what to expect, here are some of last year’s performers: Terra Serpentis, Kellianna, Dogs of War, Raab Rashi, S.S. Icarus, Katie Kat, Brotherhood Knights of Gore, and Sea Rats Atlantic.
The first day of the faire culminates with a “Festival of Fires such as few have been privileved to watch!” Come one, come all to see the nationally-known HVBRIS execute their “wickedly creative antics,” long-time festival friend George Bogorad granting a rare performance with his firewhip, and Jordana Rollerhoops and her flame-hooping.
While it might seem that a weekend like this would be impossible to top, I think the Midsummer Magic Renaissance Faire will only get better. The second weekend is the Time Traveller’s Weekend and I know so many of my friends who are more excited about this than anything else. But right now, that is all I am going to say about it. I will definitely have more information in the next few weeks, but until then, I leave you with the Facebook invite.
Same with the third weekend, Down The Crooked Fairy Lane: A Midsummer Magick Faerie Festival. Until that article, check this out.
Tickets for the faire can be bought in advance from the official Web site. Discounts for veterans, groups, and children are available as are season passes and sponsorship packages. There is fun for everyone and no age limit for admission. However, there are some general rules to follow including a costume weapon policy. For more information on these restrictions, check out the FAQ page.
I seriously can’t wait for this event, and even more so to meet the man himself, Jeff Mach, who is also responsible for binging us the Wicked Faire and Steampunk World’s Fair. While I go conjure up some costumes as well as more articles about the event, I will leave you with another commercial created by Psych Corporation to get a hint at what awaits you in the forests of Schreiber’s Farm.
