The RedHawks earned a double-shot of recognition, with two athletes being named MAC offensive players of the week. Senior running back Thomas Merriweather took home the award for the football conference's East Division, while sophomore Jess Kodiak became the second lady 'Hawk to win the award in women's soccer this season.
Merriweather was key in the 'Hawks 28-21 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday, their first win of the season. He ran over the Eagles for 105 rushing yards and found the end zone three times, tying a career-high. It was the second career 100-yard game for the senior.
Kodiak was all over the box score this weekend for the 'Hawks, picking up two goals and an assist in Miami's weekend wins over Winthrop and Temple. The 'Hawks undefeated performance on the weekend earned them the title in the Eastern Tennessee State University Soccer Invitational. Kodiak was named the tournament's MVP. She leads the conference in goals (5), assists (6) and points (16).
Merriweather and Kodiak will need to stay hot for their squads in their upcoming matches. Kodiak has scored a goal in three consecutive games, and has a point in every game played so far this season. Merriweather was a non-factor in the 'Hawks season-opening loss in Florida following an early ejection, but he was definitely the catalyst in the win over EMU. The football team will host the Colorado State Rams on Saturday, while the soccer team will face Eastern Illinois and Evansville in their first home games since the opening weekend.
