Merklinger named Own The Podium CEO

One of Canada's most powerful sports organizations now has a new Chief Executive Officer.

On Thursday, Own the Podium, the organization responsible for dividing $70 million in federal funding to winter and summer sports in Canada, has named Anne Merklinger as their new head. Own the Podium also plays a key role in funding for Canada's Olympic teams.

Merklinger replaces multi-Olympic Gold medallist Alex Baumann, who set two World Records in winning the 200m Individual Medley and 400m Individual Medley swimming competitions at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Baumann announced in September he accepted a position as Chief Executive of High Performance Sport in New Zealand.

Merklinger has an excellent resume when it comes to sport in Canada. A former member of the Canadian National Swim Team, Merklinger would later channel her focus toward curling where she represented Ontario four times as a skip at the Scott Tournament of Hearts, twice losing in the Championship Final. In recent years, Merklinger was the Director General of the Canadian Canoe Association and Own the Podium's Director of Summer Sport.
