Merfolk Mesmerist is a common blue merfolk wizard in the Magic: The Gathering 2012 Core Set. This millstone on a stick creature could be a viable addition to your Limited decks, especially with other “mill” strategies making an appearance in M12.

Merfolk Mesmerist can trade with fragile ground-bound threats, but the real strength lies in turning sideways to knock off cards from your opponent’s library. While you probably shouldn’t be trying to build a pure library destruction deck, cards like Merfolk Mesmerist and Belltower Sphinx bring that option to blue while still being efficient bodies.
Blue has been stuck with Traumatize, Tome Scour, and Jace’s Erasure as recent Core Set mill options – the options in M12 are far more robust and can function as alterative win conditions rather than going “all out” by trying to pick up all of the table’s Tome Scours and being blown out by baby goblins.
You’ll be able to do mill as a side theme without sacrificing much in the way of card quality, and a Merfolk Mesmerist turns any stalemate into a losing game for your opponent.
