MERs Music Showcase at Schubas Tavern
MER's Music Showcase

MER invites Chicago's finest artists to partake in a "songwriters in the round" session followed by a featured artist performance. This stripped down format gives front men/women a chance to step back from their bands and deliver their stories and music as they were originally contrived. Catch this unique vibe and enjoy the sincere delivery of Chicago's most dedicated songwriters! MER's Music Showcase features Liza Day, Jay Langston, Phil Jacobson, Ted Wulfers and is hosted by Schubas Tavern, 3159 North Southport Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657, on Monday, February 17th, 2014, 7:00pm.

LIZA DAY - Founded in 2008 by singer/songwriter and Wisconsin native Liza Day, this 5-piece from Chicago is rooted in the alternative-country tradition. Liza herself is a graduate and former artist in residence of The Contemporary Music Center in Martha's Vineyard. She leads the band with an unforgettably warm and pure voice skillfully combined with performances as vulnerable and sincere as the songs she's written. Musically the band's style can be described as classic country layered with a raw, untidy, rockabilly vibe.

August of 2009 saw the release of the debut album entitled, "Liza Day and the Northbound Trestle Singers", which was recorded and produced in Chicago. Since the debut's release Liza Day has completed several tours on the East Coast and in the Midwest. Back home in Chicago they continue to play many well known local venues including; Schubas Tavern, Fitzgerald's, Bottom Lounge, and many others. [from Liza Day biography]

JAY LANGSTON - Langston & Co. is the result of a life lived on the road, in upheaval, struggling to reach a destination that may not even exist.

Jay, a seasoned songwriter/guitar player/performer, began writing for Langston & Co. in 2010, after his previous national band of 8 years, split. "This endeavor was, and is necessary for me as a man, and a songwriter to move forward. I want the music to reflect the good and bad things in life that we all experience. Without all the fluff and shine, I hope the songs will speak for me."

Langston & Co. will cling to its southern roots maintaining a minimalist approach. "I want this to be about good songs, and not a lot of noise." [from Jay Langston biography]

PHIL JACOBSON - People always want to know where the story began. For Phil Jacobson, and most artists, it all started with an unexplainable need to express something, an inspiration. "I spent a lot of time listening to the radio and re-creating melodies on the piano,” Phil says. “The music would bring out feelings in me, even before I understood the words.” Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, IL, singer/songwriter Phil Jacobson found joy in the form of music. He thrived on its challenge, taking lessons in many instruments to improve. As his love for making music continued to evolve, he picked up the guitar and hasn't put it down since. He found himself enamored with the music of Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and John Mayer. He attended the University of Miami where he trained with the industry's top jazz musicians. The experience greatly influenced his view of music and its capabilities. "Studying jazz opened up my ears to new sounds. It provided a foundation that enabled me to embrace multiple styles of music." While studying at “The U”, Phil had the distinct pleasure of sharing the stage with some of today’s most respected jazz giants including Kurt Elling and fellow Miami alumni, John Secada, Carmen Lundy and Raul Midon.

For Phil, writing quality lyrics that inspire his peers has always been at the forefront of his musical endeavors. "Songwriting became an outlet for me to tell stories and describe the things around me in a musical way. It started out as just a hobby, but I fell in love with the release it provided and realized it was something I was going to be doing for the rest of my life." [from Phil Jacobson biography]

TED WULFERS - Ted Wulfers is an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Born and raised in the Chicagoland area, he splits his time between Chicago and Los Angeles but calls the road his home. He is the leader of the Ted Wulfers Band and also performs solo acoustic. As a rootsy rocker, his combination of Heartland rock, Stadium pop, Stonesy swagger, California cool and Texas twang has earned him comparisons to Tom Petty, Wilco, The Foo Fighters, Chris Isaak, Dierks Bentley, Kid Rock, Kings of Leon, Lyle Lovett and The Wallflowers. His ability as a performer to connect with listeners keeps him busy for 50-200 shows a year. [from Ted Wulfers biography]
