Mepranum's loss should serve as a wake-up call to all parties involved in Philippine boxing

Not that the kid did anything wrong. Not that he should be blamed any least bit. And most definitely not because the window of opportunity is about to close. Philippine boxing is here to stay and they came to play. Pacquiao didn't kick the doors open only for it to be abruptly shut again after he steps away from the game.

BUT...

It would be nice if we collectively stepped our games up.

There's a trend that's unraveling here. I don't want to say it's entirely true but you can sense that it's as if we're now settling and satisfied simply being invited to the party. Are you following me?

From promoters, trainers, down to the fighters and even with the media, a concerted effort needs to be done to correct the bad habits already surfacing considering Philippine boxing's young state. I say young because regardless of the long history the sport has enjoyed in the country, it's really only recently when Pacquiao burst the scene that people truly took notice.

Take for example the devastating string of losses suffered by Ciso Morales, Marvin Sonsona and now Richie Mepranum. All were highly touted prospects, and granted their careers aren't over yet, the devastating losses they've suffered, all of which ended in 5 rounds or less should serve as an eye-opener.

Do the losses mean these kids were over hyped bums as some people suggest? That's forum talk. They weren't bums, they're mortals. Instead of playing the blame game and the name calling, this should be an eye-opener for all of us that much still needs to be done.

ALSO READ: MUCH ADO ABOUT HATTON (RESPONSE TO RICKY HATTON'S STATEMENTS ON PACQUIAO AND PEDS

First and foremost, training. We have a lot of very competent trainers but let's face it, there are several flaws in the styles of our fighters. One most distinct and almost common weakness is defense. I will not pin point anyone but I'm sure those who have observed several of the up-and-coming prospects that got knocked out and derailed lacked the defensive skills and discipline to hang with the best and the bigger, more skilled world class punchers. I sometimes cringe in my seat when I see a lot of our kids leave their heads and chins up in their careless pursuit to get their punches in. We need to seriously address this. Why not invest in bringing in foreign trainers who specialize on defense and that slick style to help our fighters or even teach our trainers their methods? Even Pacquiao needed to improve his defense before he started racking up world title belts.

Also, an emphasis on conditioning, discipline and strengthening the core should become a priority. Once upon a time, Pacquiao's opponents targeted his body as it was one of his weaknesses but he has since addressed that and strengthened his abs through hard work and the unconventional stick method he employs where he allows himself to be constantly hit with a bamboo stick while training. If I were Marvin Sonsona and Ciso Morales, I'd better be getting hit with a 2 x 4 right now and doing 10,000 sit-ups a day if I want to bounce back from my embarrassing defeat. And again, DISCIPLINE. Our young fighters must truly learn how to devote themselves to their craft and not get the fame and sudden slight fortune get in their heads. No late night  hours drinking beer or any of that. YOU ARE NOT PACQUIAO.

And to the promoters, getting the fighters good paying fights and partnering with foreign promotions is good and all of that but please, know your horse as well. You don't feed a young prospect to an established world champion only to break his confidence and possibly risk permanent injury. One of the top promoters from the Philippines said to me at a fight once when I questioned the match-up of the easily outmatched Filipino fighter on a certain fight card, he responded to me saying, "It's ok as long as he fights well and holds his own, it will be good experience for him." Well the experience lasted all but a minute and I have not heard from the fighter since. So much for that theory.

I agree with you 100% that young prospects are being pushed for title fights prematurely. And they fight in the hoemtowns of their opponents.

  • PEOPLE 1 year ago

GOOD FOR THE FIGHTERS, IF THEY GOT LUCKY.........WIN OR LOSER..........WHY NOT?//////////IS ABOUT BOXING..............GET LUCKY.

  • joe mabi 1 year ago

Strangely, Floyd Mayweather Sr. is asking what accolades would be deserving for his son if he whoops Manny Pacquiao...Mr Mayweather let your son sign the fight contract first and stop opening your already BIG MOUTH, save it in the future when you will be summoned to appear for the defation/libel suit in the court of law. Let your son fight Paquiao first in the ring and let's wait for the result. No more mumbo-jumbo this time....think of the money and extra money you needed to pay for damages you eventually have to pay Pacquiao because of your big mouth.

  • concerned 1 year ago

I am with you Mr. Writer. Yes the lose to these young Filipino kids started from themselves. They NEED DISCIPLINE. Most of these new boxers the minute they heard they're fighting abroad they feel like they are big time already. Walking around like Mr. Paquioa already. And plus more faults or blame to put on their so called MANAGER, they just wanna make money too soon not realizing they really lose money too soon! wake up people! And to the fighters please help yourself, THINK!

  • to Dennis 1 year ago

You filipinos said that Ciso Morales was going to win that fight easily. It was only until after he got exposed for being a hypejob that all of a sudden his inexperience became an issue.

  • praktikal 1 year ago

Fortunately, boxers don't use deadly weapon.

  • Anselmo 1 year ago

hard work and get enough experience.. just because MSONSONA became a champ with less than 15 pro fights in his career, that doesnt mean the others can too..
Morales, Mepranum, and Bangoyan failed in their recent title bid.. all in a devastating KO..
dont rush an inexperience fighter, its like putting a sheep to a lions den..

while philippine boxing is on the upswing right now, it will never catch up with the boxing being produced by mexico and puerto rico! both of these countries are centuries ahead of the philippines as far as world champions produced, Hall of Famers, title defenses etc...since 1900, the philippines has produced but 35 world champion (which includes two fil-am's), while mexico has produced 110 mexican born champions and 43 mexican-american champions. it would take the philippines five centuries to accomplish what mexico has accomplished in 110 years, if the current trend continues. furthermore, in world title fights, mexico leads philippines, 45-23-4 and it's only going to get more one-sided in the future. sadly for filipinos, once manny retires it's back to total mediocre boxing.

  • Paclander 1 year ago

I think Pacquiao can help a lot if he wants to.....

  • arturo zamora 1 year ago

furthermore, mexico/mexican-americans have produced a total of 41 (WBHOF/IBHOF) hall of famers, while the philippines has produced but 3. mexican champions have accounted for 596 title defenses and just 58 title defenses for the philippines. in the next few years, the boxing hall of fames are going to welcome mexican fights such as julio cesar chavez, oscar de la hoya, erik morales, marco antonio barrera, johnny tapia, fernando montiel, jose luis castillo, rafael marquez and israel vazquez while the philippines just has manny pacquiao as a sure-fire hall of famer.

  • Los 1 year ago

I have high hopes for Bernabe Concepcion...

  • Lester 1 year ago

    @arturo zamora
    youre right.
we only have PAC, against hundreds of mexicans.
    but tell us, please.
how many mexicans have broken old records and setting up new ones??
like conquering 7 div. weight classes?
i dont think this record can be broken..
    what do you think?

  • Zeus 1 year ago

Floyd is a coward, period!! he can prove that his not once he fights PAC. but until then, he'll always be a coward in my book. home of the brave? yeah right.

  • arturo zamora 1 year ago

    Lester,

winning world titles isn't as hard as it used to be. with so many weight divisions (17) and boxing organizations (4), it doesn't surprise me that there are so many multiple world titlist. what pacquiao has done is remarkable but certainly he isn't the only one who has a solid record or who had a spectacular career. julio cesar chavez sr. only won world titles in 3 weight divisions but he also has the all-time record in boxing with the most successful title defenses for a career with 27. not only that, he started 89-0-1 before losing his first fight but he also had won 3 division titles and had 23 title defenses before ever losing his very first bout. that i believe is more remarkable than winning 7 titles because there are so many champions today, it's easier to win them. as the saying goes, it's easier to win a world title than defending it. his all-time record in world title fights was 31-4-2 which is something pacquiao will never be able to do.

  • Worrier 1 year ago

what's the big deal? this is sports. this is competition. we can't expect an athlete to win all the time.

  • Lester 1 year ago

world titles are not as hard as it used to be? if thats the case.
then how come only PACMAN has ever done that?
theres no doubt CHAVEZ SR. is one of the best, and yes, PAC can never surpass his achievement. but so does PACMANS record, that itself is so hard to surpass.
and pls, stop comparing Mexicos achievement in boxing to the Phils. the Phils only started to get exposure this decade, tnx to the PACMAN.

  • dorapostol 1 year ago

And ALA Gym should get the lion's share of the blame. Not only are these nicompoops producing over-hyped underachievers, they are literally endangering the lives of these hapless chaps (read: Z Gorres, Ray Bautista, AJ Banal to name a few). The Aldeguers should be lynched for being frauds and charlatans. The one thing they and their trainers (Villamor being top of the list) are very good at is in teaching boxers how to run out of gas by the 3rd round.

Good thing the current cream of the crop Pinoy boxers (Pac, Donaire and Abe Concepcion) never set foot in ALA, otherwise, God forbid, they would have had the same bad habits as Boom-Boom et al.

  • stupidd 1 year ago

@ dorapostol, wow you are really attacking the ALA gym eh.. under achievers? are you kidding me, im sure they achieved a lot more in their lives than what you have done. and your praising abe conception for not being in the ALA gym, well sorry to bust your bubble, hes another "over-hyped unacheiver" if u watched his last fight, he ran out of gas, and was just lucky enough that it was the last round.. just wait till he gets knocked out my juan ma. lopez.. im sure you'll be one of those people that will jump of the bandwagon and say he's a bum too like ALA fighters.. so shut your mouth about ALA gym and its fighters, cuz i know for sure your ass cant fight for to save ur life..

  • king Sib of Palau 1 year ago

to arturo zamora -stop chasing the mexican's or puerto rican's records. The important thing here is no mexican or puerto rican could shut down manny as of the moment.

And for the future of philippine boxing, we don't need one million filipino champions to show that we are awsome. Certainly another very great filipino fighter will come out of the abyss. Filipinos are great people, and somewhere sometime he will surely come out. Top that!

  • king Sib of Palau 1 year ago

Pacquiao can K.O. Julio Chavez Sr. and Jr. together and Margarito and even Zorro himself.

  • right 1 year ago

@ stupidd i agree with you. most of these people commenting on articles and forums dont know anything about boxing. most of them just read articles and believe what it says, and they'll use that article for reference and tell their friends that this is what happened, so they can look cool around their friend. cuz i know if boxers left comments on articles they wouldnt say negative stuff about their fellow boxers, especially filipino boxers. the ones leaving hate comments are the silly fans that think they know it all. and i can assure you even the author of this article doesnt really know alot about boxing, he knows how to write about boxing, but he doesnt really know what a boxer goes through each and every day, author is saying that boxers should do the stick training like pacman..i ask why?? not all boxers are the same, just cuz pacman did doesnt mean every boxer in the world should do it.

  • jackbw9 1 year ago

They're following Golden Boy's footsteps on how to mishandle their top prospects.

  • Manny 1 year ago

No need to ask that QUESTION... This has happened to several others several times. You have Banal, Bautista, Sansona, Morales, Mepranum and etc. They call that OVERCONFIDENT! Ask Mar Roxas what does that mean. For the Boxers, WE NEED MORE EXPOSURES!

  • phuyax071 1 year ago

To all Promoters Trainors and Managers, Dont just JUMP into conclusion that your fighter is Ready to fight World Championships once they had 3 or more convincing wins prior. And Their Record is 20 fights or less. You should look into deeper consideration, Your fighter should be exposed more and trained more as what required for the boxer. Look at the son of legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, even on 40+ fights without defeat, still he is not fighting for World Championship Belts, because the people around him knows what is the real level Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. now. One step Higher at a time. He will fight Duddy soon, also a World Class Fighter. You should Consider these process in order to have a Filipino World Class Fighter,... Like The PACMAN....

  • virgo 1 year ago

Yes you are correct. We have several talented fighters but they are not properly prepared. Like ALA Boxers are very talented but they lack stamina and cannot sustain a 12 rounds fight because they ran out of gas and cannot take hard punches. So it is very clear that they lack necessary preparation.

  • nightwatch 1 year ago

Let's just use Pacquiao's unconventional stick method to these promoters and fighters head. Maybe the'll start to wake up.

  • SickRogerMayweather 1 year ago

It's Manny Pacquiao's fault. He is just too selfish and do not share his A-METH? Had Manny shared it, even bullets will be bouncing off Mepranum's body. RIGHT ROGER MAYWEATHER? haha

  • rj 1 year ago

pac has brought a lot of attention to filipino boxing, but the reality is that the talent pool and training regimen in the philippines hasnt improved very much. the filipino public is anxious for the next pac to come along which results in prospects getting a lot of exposure & fame even though many simply arent destined to ever become elite

another problem is that every young filipino prospect wants to be the next pac. those expectations are unrealistic because a fighter like pac only comes once every few generations. many of these prospects become overconfident with their success over low caliber opposition and believe they can demolish any opponent like pac has done, but once they step up, they often fold under pressure because they havent prepared themselves for that possibility of facing adversity. mexican prospects on the other hand, are hungry because most are unknown until they win a title and they have the mindset that theyll have to go through hell in order to achieve victo

  • mianz 1 year ago

let's just think of it as a lesson for them. their time will come and they should improve themselves and try harder just like what happen to mayol. may pag-asa pa habang may buhay.

  • Ruben DG 1 year ago

Lets face it, there are several Philippine boxing promoters that would accept an offer for a title shot and a big paycheck from a prominent boxing promoter abroad even if they know that the chance of victory is almost nil.

Most of these young filipino boxers Ciso Morales, Marvin Sonsona and now Mepranum lack the experience, dicipline and proper training to fight the top caliber boxers they have fought and the outcome is as clear as the day light. But because of greedy boxing priomoters, their careers are now uncertain.

  • ben kisla 1 year ago

you're right Dennis. A lot of our young fighters are ill prepared. All (promoters, trainers and the rest of the gangs) wanted to be on the Pacquiao bandwagon...

  • SecondsOut 1 year ago

Ruben DG's comment is exactly right, a lot of the blame comes from greedy promoters throwing out our young prospects to the wolves before they are seasoned and up to the task ... case in point: a young up and coming Jimrex Jaca when he was still young thrown into the ring to face P4P veteran fighter Juan Manuel Marquez ... when I first heard of this match-up I was disgusted that they would risk serious injury to this young hopeful, Jimrex fought galiantly but was beaten soundly by the veteran Mexican Marquez and many Mexican were laughing at the sight of a filipino being beaten by their Man, we should learn from this & not expose our young prospect to this humiliation.

  • HOMER 1 year ago

These overly hyped young Filipino boxers fought bums and then they would suddenly fight in the world stage equipped only with pure guts but lacks in technique and fundamentals. Pacquiao is destined to greatness, he arrived to Roach relying to power and stamina but coach provide him techniques to learn and eventually became the "Greatest of All Time"

  • delpilar 1 year ago

most pinoy promoters & managers are scums. they only think of the earnings.

the secret of success by pac was getting away from their grips.

Not even Mr. tygart, and not even mongofloyd who haven't said an itty bitty word ever since....so don't be so bitter about the success of pacman, that is hardwork man..as for you maybe you should get a life, saying about filipinos..you afe like your master mongofloyd, already a second class citizen and still acting like a drag-queen racist.!!! pweh!!!

Filipino handler/s, co-promoter/s and trainer/s should change their crab mentality to reality. No more saying, BAKA MAKATSAMBA OR BAKA SAKALI. They are always thinking of one hit instant money. Don't rush your fighter/s and be well prepared. Know your opponent cridential if the fighter is competetive not a mismatch. In boxing it's really hard to win a fight by TSAMBA.

  • Chicago guy 1 year ago

Filino writers or Filam writers like Dennis, Marv also with help of Scott and Mike Marley are big help of exposing pinoy talent in the boxing world. Pinoy talents will not be known without them. They are not criticizing but they need something to be change for the better for our boxer's boxing career.

  • sumyoungguy 1 year ago

i would have to agree with you on this one.
its always exciting to see our kids in championship fights, but more often than not, we are dissappointed with a shut out loss.

Do not forget the illegal deductions of agents exacted on their unsuspecting wards notably the deliberate exclusion from their contract their rightful share of television rights once they move up to world title status.

BEWARE OF AGENTS MASQUERADING AS HONEST BROKERS.
CHECK THE TRANSACTIONS MADE BY SUCH AGENTS, ONE OF WHICH IS SO NOTORIOUS THAT HE GETS SLAPPED, PUNCHED, KICKED EVERY NOW AND THEN.

I WONDER IF THE PACMAN KNOWS ABOUT HIS CROOKED WAYS.
    FOR SUC

Have to remind to all Pinoy upcoming boxers that there's I in discipline and no I in hype its Y (Why).

  • Chicago guy 1 year ago

    Gacal.
If you are the real Gacal you are a lawyer. You should say everything should be in black and white first. Boxer/s should read the contract first before signing it. If the boxer/s is lack of education and can't understand the contract, he should have an honest handler/s to explain everything to him to be fair.

  • noynoy 1 year ago

that was a good lesson, no excuses

  • Mr. HYDE 1 year ago

I totally agree with the writer. These boxing groups in the Philippines should invest on good trainers who knows their craft. They should not be satisfied with mediocre kind of training and convictions, just to make some money. Money and accolades would come along the way if these young boxers are awarded more quality wins. Good luck to our young boxers, and more power to them.

  • bruce 1 year ago

What is this rubbish article? The Philippines people should reconsider another sport or don't compete at all. Pilipino people will never be good at sports, just look at the Olympics. Compared to North Korea and other poor countries your country should be ashamed since those countries actually get gold, silver, or bronze medals. Saying your people are ill-prepared is an excuse, they are just lazy and not motivated. Maybe your country needs to educate the young because Philippines is the lowest economic valued country in ASEAN. Even that Mexico economy even makes Philippines economy looks dumb.
