Mentoring Monday - Moreena and Me

See also

A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. A mentor is someone who allows you to know that no matter how dark the night, in the morning joy will come. A mentor is someone who allows you to see the higher part of yourself when sometimes it becomes hidden to your own view.

I think mentors are important and I don't think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship. Nobody makes it alone. Nobody has made it alone. And we are all mentors to people even when we don't know it.

- Oprah Winfrey

We met via occupational hazard - she needed my help. Moreena: You became my mentor by first starting as my guidance counselor in middle school. You helped me with my portfolio for my high school application so we spent more time together. After I left middle school, we just stayed in contact regularly.

Our limited interaction was an hour of Extended Enrichment, four day a week. It was a tough class... for both of us. She was constantly testing limits so I had to use every ounce of training to remember that.

Mo: Having a mentor means having another set of eyes and ears that help you. With a mentor, I have another adult in my life that has a different perspective than others that can help me in situations. Having a mentor means having a person that's always on your side and can give you advice that's best for you.

When did our relationship change, I wonder that myself.
Mo: I really enjoy going out to eat, which is often. In particularly, places I hadn't been there before. One day I really enjoyed was when we were celebrating my birthday. I enjoyed that whole day because I had fun at the Love GIRLS event in Virginia and shopping for the photo shoot.

The first time I heard the word "mentor" in the same sentence as our relationship, I was surprised. I thought she had a mentor.

Mo: Christin Roby is also my mentor. She's a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism and we met while she was an intern at my middle school. She assisted in my Broadcast Media {Extended Enrichment Club} and we just clicked while she helped me with my high school application. We're both interested in writing and film production so we have a lot in common.

She's still growing and learning. That's why I love her!

Mo: I think I would like to have a male mentor to change things up. It would be nice to get advice from someone of the different gender. I would like to be a mentor one day, but I'm not sure if I could. I know throughout your lifetime, you're constantly learning new things but I don't think I've learned enough for myself at this point to mentor someone else.

It was an organic connection that has been exciting, frustrating, amazing and scary.
Mo: There some things I want us to do like produce a short film and go out of town. That would me nice!

Moreena is her name and she is my mentee!
