Mental benefits of exercise

For some people, the idea of heading out for a leisurely jog is similar to taking a vacation day for a dentist appointment: the ultimate buzz kill. However, if you're having a cavity filled, the buzzing -- unfortunately -- continues with reckless abandon.

I digress. Even if running is not your schtick, lacing up your gym shoes and doing, well, anything has a variety benefits. Trim waistlines aside, here are just a few of the mental benefits associated with getting your hustle on:

  1. Mood boost. Ever catch yourself smiling for no apparent reason while exercising? No? Just me? Physical activity can boost your mood. In fact, it's practically science. "In a 2007 study in the journal of Psychosomatic Medicine, depressed people who were engaged in an exercise program recovered about as well as people who took medication," reports Health.com.
  2. Stress reliever. In a similar fashion, getting your sweat on is the new stress ball. Exercise helps the body control the release of cortisol, a hormone dispensed in response to stressful situations.
  3. Self-image. I think most of us have realized that we're never gonna look like Kate Upton rocking the cover of Sports Illustrated, but you have to admit that a little cardio can do oodles for your mental mojo.
  4. Productivity soars. People who regularly carve out time for exercise tend to feel more accomplished and be more efficient in other aspects of their life, too. Time to cram for an exam or buckle down at work? Try working out first thing in the morning to ride the productivity wave all day long. Plus, the more fitness goals you reach, the higher you'll aim.
