It was nice to see Monday's presidential inauguration unite a nation. A nation united behind menswear for women! Michelle Obama's inaugural coat and dress, designed by Thom Browne, was inspired by men's silk ties. It was amazing! The perfect mix of tailored and glam with the geometric patterned navy silk partnered with with irregular cut crystallized belt.
I am a huge fan of menswear. Not only becauase fabrics are always rich in color and pattern. But it also exudes special level of confidence, to wear men's fashion and wear it better. Even all that being said, Monday's look still kicked it up a notch. Traditionally when we think of a tailored menswear look, it is tweed, wool pinstrip or crisp dress shirts. But Browne went for the piece de restistance, the tie, the accent piece. A tie in a man's ensemble not only makes or breaks the look, it tells you a lot about him. Is is bold, conservative or even elegant; it sets the tone.
The first lady's coat said she was strong, confident, classic but a little edgy. And isn't that what we are all looking for?
