Club America continues their good run through La Liga MX in their quest to win back-to-back titles. This time the azulcremas defeated Monarcas Morelia 3-1 at the Azteca stadium in week 7 action of the Apertura 2013.
The eagles climbed to the top of the league table knocking off Morelia with the victory. Raul Jimenez scored his fourth goal of the season proving that he is a rising star in the organization. Luis Mendoza scored a double to wrap up the game at the colossal stadium.
“I’m happy with the result and how the team played,” Mendoza said after the game. “I thank God for my goals, but it was a team effort. You never know what will happen in a game. There are circumstances. I was able to take advantage and score.”
With the 2-1 Mendoza broke the net once more to seal the game. He was in position on the wing and saw that goalkeeper Federico Vilar was off his line. He volleyed the ball over the keeper who could only see it travel over him and into the net.
“I saw that Vilar hesitated,” Mendoza explained about his second goal. “That gave me reason to shoot, so I decided to kick it over him. Thank God it went in.”
The 23 year-old said that this was one of the best games he has ever played in and that the America jersey did not place extra weight on his shoulders. “El Quick” Mendoza also expressed that from his arrival in Mexico City the jersey felt natural on him.
“From that first moment I arrived, I had been told that I was coming to this team, from that moment I had a great sense of pride to come here,” Mendoza concluded.
America takes over the league table with two less games than most teams in La Liga MX. Morelia and Leon FC also have 13 points, but the eagles lead on goal differential.
