Men who do ‘women’s work’ have less sex, says study

Helping around the house and doing chores that have been traditionally seen as women’s work does more than affect a man’s self-esteem. New research conducted by Sabino Kornrich and his team from the Center for Advanced Studies at the Juan March Institute in Madrid, concludes that men who pitch in at home are rewarded with less frequent sex, reports TODAY on January 30.

Data collected in the 1996 survey, Wave II of the National Survey of Families and Households, or NSFH, found statistically significant differences in the sexual activity of men who did domestic chores, like cooking, cleaning and laundry, and those who did not.

Sabino Kornrich, lead author of a study that appears in the February issue of the American Sociological Review, admits the data is nearly 20 years old, but says that gender roles really haven’t changed that much.

According to the results, men who did all of the housework had sex 3.2 times per month, while men whose wives took care of the household had sex 4.8 times a month.

Ironically, Kornrich shares with Today that, "Earlier research has found that women's marital satisfaction is linked to men's participation in the household." He explains that men who refuse to do any housework could cause conflict in the marriage, leading to the wife feeling lower marital satisfaction.

Earlier this year, The Telegraph reported that research conducted by a Norwegian team concluded that the more chores a man does around the house, the more likely the marriage is to end in divorce, citing a 50 percent higher divorce rate among couples who shared the housework equally compared to those marriages where the wife assumed responsibility for all household chores.

No research has been done to determine whether the lower rate of sexual activity in married men who share “female” chores is the result of men being too tired at the end of the day to engage in sexual activity.
