What is a hipster? Lumberjack turned urban farmer?

According to Urban Dictionary.com, “Hipsters are a subculture of men and women who typically value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and Indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.”

Where did it all start? Roughly speaking the 90s, according to Norman Mailer (Now that’s ironic) and why? Although, "Hipsterism" is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. James with his growing beard seems to lean hipster.

Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes-thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hairstyles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs.

When did hipster become a global trend? About two years ago when Berlin, Germany hosted the first Hipster Olympics is the best guess, especially since no one actually will admit to being a hipster.

During the summer of 2013 at the second annual Hipster Olympics a man pretended to play keytar on stage during the hipster hip-a-thon but he wouldn’t actually say whether or not he was a hipster at play.

So hipsterism is a relatively recent trend with hipster peeps turning up at these events to strut their hipster savvy in challenges such as the ‘Horn-Rimmed Glasses Throw,' 'Skinny Jeans Tug-O-War,' 'Vinyl Record Spinning Contest' and 'Cloth Tote Sack Race.'

The Hipster Olympics both mocks and celebrates the Hipster subculture, which some critics claim could never be accurately defined and others that it never existed in the first place.

The imprecise nature of determining what makes one a member means that the symptomatic elements of adherents to the group vary in each country, but the archetype of the version in Berlin, one of the more popular locations for those following its lifestyle, along with London and Brooklyn, includes a penchant for canvas tote bags, the carbonated yerba mate drink Club Mate, analogue film cameras, asymmetrical haircuts, 80s neon fashion, and, allegedly, a heavy dose of irony.

To some in Berlin, members of the hipster 'movement' have replaced a former unwanted identity in gentrifying neighborhoods, the Yuppie, for targets of criticism, as landlords raise rents in the areas to which they relocate, particularly the up-and-coming neighborhood of Neukoelln.

To achieve a hipster look you will need to cultivate and grow a beard, wear a scarf, pinky ring, graze chickens in your back yard, don buffalo plaid, moustache and more. Has James tipped his fashion hat toward a hipster style with his beard, scarf and pinky ring, now I wonder if he has chickens? I guess we’ll never really know, will we?
