Men's health awareness: reducing the health risks associated with aging

The United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has declared a campaign to improve awareness of the health issues facing men, in an effort to reduce the number of men that will experience serious health complications due to a stubborn refusal to visit their doctor. The report stems from growing statistics revealing that men are 24 percent less likely than women to have visited their doctor each year and 30 percent more likely than women to be hospitalized for a condition that could have been prevented. This year, bioidentical hormone therapy is a likely solution for many men to prevent conditions that are often brushed off as the symptoms of aging.

These ignored symptoms are most commonly linked to andropause, a condition in men similar to the female menopause, when men experience a decline in hormones essential to long-term health. Andropause is treatable and preventable, but a routine doctor’s visit is the cornerstone for avoiding the lasting effects of this condition.

Unlike menopause, andropause affects men slowly throughout the latter half of their lifespan and there is no marked occasion to signal its arrival. After age 20, men begin to experience a decline in growth hormones at a rate of approximately 14 percent every ten years. By age 40, the traditional marker of the notorious midlife crisis, men have lost nearly half of their growth hormones.  Symptoms may include:

  • Increased body fat
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Muscle loss or weakness
  • Hair loss
  • Fatigue or lack of energy

Treatment plans may be as simple as changes to nutrition or more complex, using bioidentical hormones to prevent and, sometimes, reverse symptoms and conditions.
