Witnesses could not believe what they were seeing on the streets of Wickford on October 20. Shocking disbelief gripped everyone as two men ran away from the havoc they had just caused. They were recklessly driving a horse-pulled cart when it suddenly veered into a parked car. That collision of horse, cart and vehicle was devastating for the horse, who suffered horrific injuries.
The distressed witnesses called a veterinarian to help the injured horse, but despite the vet’s best efforts, the horse could not be saved and she died at the scene.
The men were careening down Moreland Road, when suddenly the horse ran head-first into a parked Ford Focus. The bay mare suffered horrific injuries in the crash. Despite her need for help, the shocked witnesses saw the two men unhitch the horse and just leave the suffering animal as they fled the scene.
A bystander said, “It was clear the horse was horrifically injured. I arrived after the accident happened, but I know some people were saying the two blokes just separated the cart from the horse and did a runner.”
People were quick to report the accident to Essex police, and to call in the RSPCA and a veterinarian.
PC Lisa Thompson was one of the officers called to the scene. Thompson said,
The bay mare had been well looked after, but she suffered terrible injuries when she ran into the parked car. The vet tried for an hour to save her, but in vain.
Police arrested a 28-year-old man from Billericay and a 26-year-old man from Wickford on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision and causing criminal damage. No names have been released.
Witnesses to the crash are asked to please call PC Thompson at the Laindon road policing unit on 101.
