‘Men in Black’ helmer Barry Sonnenfeld to direct ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ TV spinoff

And they say there are no original ideas in Hollywood. The CW network is going forward with an hourlong pilot for “Beverly Hills Cop,” based on the Eddie Murphy Franchise, and according to Deadline Hollywood, Barry Sonnenfeld is going to direct.

Sonnenfeld has directed all three “Men in Black” features, in addition “The Addams Family” feature, and its sequel, “Addams Family Values.” Sonnefeld also helmed the critically well-regarded “Get Shorty” and the somewhat less critically well-regarded Will Smith reboot of “Wild Wild West.” He does have extensive credits as both a TV producer and director.

Brandon T. Jackson (“Tropic Thunder,” “Fast & Furious,” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”) will play Aaron Foley, the son of Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley character. The pilot will co-star Kevin Pollack and David Denman.

The “Beverly Hills Cop” pilot was written by Shawn Ryan, who will also co-executive produce along with original movie series star Eddie Murphy, who is expected to reprise his Axel Foley role in the pilot.
