Women's fashion designers and women's fashion are more popular then men's fashion when it comes to shows and exposure, $400 billion to $621 billion worldwide as noted in an ABC news report. Larry D. Woodward, President and CEO of Graham Stanley Advertising and an advertising columnist stated in referring to the subject of male models making less than female models, that females are involved when it comes to fashion in a way that men aren't involved. That a woman will want to shop around and look at beautiful designs of clothing even if they can't buy it because they want to look at it and understand it. Men don't have to become like women to develop their own sense of style or enjoy male fashion but the men's fashion industry really doesn't give the average man any model to look to for guidance and comparison. Neither do fashion designers--a scan through websites of current fashion designer retail items shows overpriced clothing which only caters to ultra high-end customers.
Designers such as Ian Velardi, Todd Snyder, Ovadia & Sons and Mark McNairy had staple items that any man should have in their closet (sports jackets, woven long sleeve shirts, suits, sweats) priced at over $200. Designer Todd Snyder prices at worn, heather grey graphic print tee shirt at $85. A wool chino pair of shorts on Mark McNairy's website costs $208. A chambray denim shirt on the Ovadia & Sons website costs $215 or a chino on the Saturday's NYC website will cost $118. The combination of these prices plus male models who look too much like models and not enough like average males make other males walk by Men's Style magazines and discourage them at clothing stores. A common response from males would be "No one I know looks like that so why should I?" or "I'd feel too uncomfortable wearing something like that." Sales growth for Men's Fashion for 2013 was projected to be between 7-9% according to a Bloomberg Businessweek news report this year and TV shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire serve to motivate average men to develop their own style but for now, the interest is in certain age and economic pocket demographics.
