Description: This year’s Connections Series exhibit is centered around an original “I AM A MAN” sign from the Memphis Sanitation Workers strike in 1968. The exhibit will examine how, since its original use in the strike, this powerful artifact has served as an icon for social, political and artistic expressions. The exhibit shows several variations on the original artifact. There are two protest signs carried in the aftermath of Dr. King’s assassination, a portfolio of Ernest Withers’ photographs of the strike, and a Tim Rollins & KOS painting “IM,” which we are borrowing from the Brooks Museum of Art.
