A 23-year-old father from Memphis, Tenn., Sebastian Pegues, was found guilty on Jan 30. of the brutal and tragic first-degree murder of his three-month-old baby daughter, Kalissa.

Baby Kalissa died on June 25, 2012, according to a report from WMCTV.

The Shelby County District Attorney's Office shared that the baby died from internal bleeding, cracked ribs, and severe liver damage – all from a beating received in her father’s Memphis home.

The DA's office also stated that doctors saw evidence of long-term abuse.

The baby also suffered abuse at the hands of her mother, Teresa Pegues, who has been charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect in the same case.

Throughout the trial, the father tried to blame the injuries to his three-month-old daughter on his eight-year-old stepdaughter.

But it only took the jury about two hours of deliberation before convicting Pegues on murder and child abuse charges in Judge Bobby Carter’s courtroom on Thursday, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Pegues will be back in court on Feb. 28 for sentencing.

Life in prison is the automatic sentence for murder convictions and aggravated child abuse carries up to 25 years in prison with no parole.
