The pace of life can be a bit rapid at times. Sometimes we just need to slow it down, southern-style. Take a timeout from the rat-race to enjoy a cool drink and a tasty dish in a relaxing atmosphere. Nothing says "slow down" like a venue that oozes southern soul. Memphis Cafe in Costa Mesa near the popular Lab provides an intimate setting only seating 45 guests at a time in the dining area, including bar. My personal favorite is the patio area which only seats 30 and is reminiscent of a classic southern porch with party lights and all.

Happy hour is every day from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm, but on Wednesday and Thursday nights Memphis offers a special happy hour from 10:00 pm to 1:30 am. Not only are there great drink specials, there is a large assortment of yummy munchies to enjoy.

Starting at $3 you can snack on matchstick fries, hoppin’ john or mashed potatoes and gravy. For $4 pick a classic cocktail such as the Greyhound, Tom Collins, Cuba Libre, Whiskey Sour or Margarita. All other well drinks are also available for $4. Then try the sweet potato fries or the mac and cheese. Yum!

Got five bucks? Great, you could try the house made pizza with roasted tomato garlic sauce, tomatoes, okra and sausage, the mini meatloaf sandwich, the zuni flatbread with pepper jack cheese, sage pesto and corn salsa, the pulled pork sliders, popcorn shrimp, hush puppies or the fried okra. All that grub has probably made you thirsty, but that’s okay because $5 gets you draft beer like Anchor Steam IPA, Murphy’s Stout and Longboard Lager. For bottled beer the choices are Amstel Light, Stella Artois, Negra Modelo, Lost Coast Great White Ale, Abita Turbo Dog Brown Ale, Liberty Ale, Dixie Lager, Lagunitas Pilsner. If wine is more your style, try the Scarlet of Paris Pinot Noir or the Whiplash Chardonnay.

Feeling relaxed already? Wait until you try one of the mixologists' craft southern cocktails like the Memphis Mint Julep, the Brown Derby, the Rye Manhattan, the Tequila Buck or the Vodka Daisy. All of these specialty cocktails are available for only $6 during happy hour! For the same price munch on the chicken and shrimp gumbo, roasted beet salad and steamed mussels and clams. The gumbo cheese fries and Dungeness crab cakes are $7. The popcorn shrimp tacos and barbecued duck quesadilla are $8. Finally, for $9 try the soul burger.

So what are you waiting for? Hurry down to Memphis Café and then take it slow enjoying all the flavors of happy hour.
