A memorial service for a K-9 officer killed last week in South Carolina will be held Friday, Fox Carolina News reported June 17.

This Examiner article covered the tragic death of Gio, who was off-duty at the time of the accident.

Gio, a heroic member of the Greenville Police Department, was in an officer's personal vehicle when he jumped out and was stuck by oncoming traffic in the Woodruff/Scuffletown Road area. He died from injuries received in the accident.

The memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in front of the law enforcement center in downtown Greenville. The Greenville Police Department is asking people to donate to the Greenville Police K9 Fund in lieu of flowers.

Officer Johnathan Bragg told Fox Carolina the department is planning to add a new K-9 officer in to get the unit back to regular staffing.

Rest in Peace, sweet Gio. You will be missed.
