A memorial for slain pedestrian and West Calhoun community member Caitlan Barton was held in the parking lot of the Calhoun Executive Center Monday evening, February 17. The event was hosted by the West Calhoun Neighborhood Council, the Cedar-Isles-Dean Neighborhood Association, and at-large Park Board member Meg Forney. Members of the community came out to express their remembrances of Caitlan and their grief at her passing. For more information on this incident, please see this article your Examiner collaborated on with the Southwest Journal. The Star Tribune has also posted an obituary for Barton. Several public officials also attended the memorial, including Hennepin County Commissioner Gail Dorfman, St. Louis Park Council member Anne Mavity, State Representative Frank Hornstein, State Senator Scott Dibble, and Ward 13 Council Member Linea Palmisano.
After several of the public officials spoke, those gathered commenced a memorial walk from the parking lot to the scene of the accident, at Market Plaza and West Lake Street. Several candles were laid and a makeshift memorial was created at the sight. The walkers were escorted by a Minneapolis police officer. The entire event was a solemn occasion, a time for reflection and grief, and a stepping stone toward public and community action on safety in this neighborhood. A public meeting will be held in the next several weeks to discuss traffic safety.
Special thanks to Aaron Shaffer, former board member on the West Calhoun Neighborhood Council, for contributing some photos to this slide show. Stay tuned to your Examiner for more updates on safety in the West Calhoun neighborhood.
