Edward Gardner loved animals, said his best friend Jim Gollwitzer. He loved them so much that on Memorial Day he pulled his car over on an Illinois interstate and got out to protect a family of ducklings trying to cross. For that act of compassion, after a limousine ran into him, Gardner paid the ultimate price—his life.
In response to reader comments on a previous article about the incident, Animal Policy Examiner asked Gollwitzer for information on how to express condolences to Gardner's loved ones.
“Eddy was very passionate about the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary,” Gollwitzer replied in an email. “We are asking for donations in Eddy's honor to be sent [there]."
Gollwitzer provided the following information about Wild Wolf Sanctuary on a flyer:
“They are a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing permanent, safe sanctuary for abused and abandoned captive-bred wolves and wolf-dogs.
“Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary offers many different membership packages, animal sponsorships, and enrichment fundraisers, as well as the option to make a donation of your choice.
“We thoroughly appreciate any help we can get to support our animals!
“All donations are tax-deductible.”
"It was no surprise what he did,” Gollwitzer told WLS-TV Chicago, “that he would risk his life to save another. That's the kind of guy he was. Just an amazing spirit.”
